Why Apple is Suing OpenAI (And the Hidden iPhone Killer They Tried to Build)

Why Apple is Suing OpenAI (And the Hidden iPhone Killer They Tried to Build)

TL;DR: Apple just dropped a massive federal lawsuit against OpenAI. The core accusation? Apple claims Sam Altman’s AI empire methodically poached its top hardware engineers and coached them to steal trade secrets to build a physical AI gadget to destroy the iPhone.

From Partners to Enemies

Just two years ago, Apple and OpenAI were making nice. They struck a high-profile deal to bake ChatGPT right into Apple Intelligence. But behind the scenes, things went south fast.

The turning point came when OpenAI started pivoting from pure software to building its own physical AI consumer hardware. OpenAI bought Jony Ive’s secret startup, io Products, for a cool $6.5 billion in 2025. Suddenly, OpenAI wasn’t just an AI vendor; they were actively trying to replace the iPhone.

The Spy Novel Allegations

Apple’s 41-page federal lawsuit reads less like corporate litigation and more like a corporate thriller:

  • The “Show and Tell” Interviews: Apple accuses its former Vice President (now OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer) Tang Tan of running interviews where Apple candidates were asked to bring in actual physical, unreleased Apple device parts to show off.
  • The “LOL” Security Breach: The lawsuit explicitly quotes Slack logs of former Apple engineer Chang Liu, who reportedly figured out he still had access to Apple’s internal servers after leaving. He allegedly messaged a colleague, “LOL, I found out I can access the [network storage], so funny,” before downloading massive files on unreleased tech.
  • Exit Coaching: Apple claims OpenAI actively coached departing employees on how to hide their move to prevent Apple from locking their laptops early, leaving them a two-week window to siphon data.

The Fallout

OpenAI says they have “no interest in other companies’ trade secrets”, but the damage to the relationship is done. If you caught Apple’s latest Siri rollout, you probably noticed they quietly dropped OpenAI and are now using Google’s Gemini models instead.

Silicon Valley’s biggest tech alliance has officially turned into its biggest war.
