Every September, the tech industry collectively holds its breath for Cupertino’s latest keynote. The rumor mill this cycle is spinning into overdrive with whispers of the iPhone 18, a potential titanium-clad iPhone Ultra, camera-packed AirPods, and Meta Ray-Ban copycats.
Chasing ambient camera glasses and sensor-stuffed earbuds misses what made Apple hardware legendary: seamless utility that respects privacy. Most people don’t want face-mounted surveillance gear.
Instead of another silicon gimmick, here are four hardware moves Apple should actually make.
1. Open-Ear AirPods for Actual Runners
In-ear silicon tips seal off the outside world, trap heat, and turn sweaty during a five-mile run. Bone conduction often sounds hollow, and Transparency Mode still feels synthetic when wind is whipping past.
Nothing proved with the Ear (open) that you can build lightweight, off-ear directional audio that sounds rich while keeping your ear canal completely clear. Apple needs an AirPods Open: an ergonomic, wrap-around design tailored for endurance athletes and commuters who want spatial music without sacrificing situational awareness.
2. A Screenless Health Band with Month-Long Battery
The Apple Watch is a capable smartwatch, but it comes with screen fatigue and daily charger anxiety. Many athletes don’t want wrist notifications, app grids, or a glowing display lighting up a bedroom.
Apple needs a dedicated, screenless fitness band aimed square at WHOOP.
- Form Factor: Low-profile fabric strap with zero distracting screens at most, an ambient micro-LED array for discreet time checks.
- Battery Endurance: Two to four weeks of continuous runtime on a single charge.
- Function: Uncompromising biometrics tracking heart rate variability, recovery metrics, and sleep stages directly into Apple Health without constant charging stops.
3. A Truly Untethered 5G MacBook
Carrying a $2,000 workstation only to hunt for coffee shop Wi-Fi or burn down iPhone battery life via personal hotspot is an outdated compromise. The iPad has offered integrated cellular connectivity for over a decade.
A 5G-enabled MacBook Pro or Air with an integrated eSIM would turn the Mac into an always-connected machine. Open the lid on a train, at an airport terminal, or in a park, and immediately pull down updates without toggling tethering menus.
4. The Return of the Apple AirPort Router
With recent government restrictions on vulnerable foreign networking hardware and third-party smart routers routinely monetizing household telemetry, home networking is a security minefield.
Apple abandoned the AirPort line in 2018, leaving home gateways to mesh providers owned by advertising and retail giants. Bringing back the AirPort Mesh would give users an encrypted, privacy-centric home router tightly woven into the HomeKit architecture, ensuring local traffic stays entirely off corporate data harvesting servers.
