Ford Has the Tech to Win the EV Race. Dealerships Might Kill It Anyway.

Ford just closed out an impressive quarter. The numbers look healthy, and more importantly, the strategic thinking around their upcoming electric platform finally feels coherent.

When Ford leadership spoke on Joanna Stern’s podcast recently, they made an honest admission: legacy brands cannot build next-generation electric vehicles with an old mindset. To build a proper modern EV platform, Ford had to pull a skunkworks move. They isolated a dedicated design and engineering team to develop a ground-up platform with genuine digital DNA.

That kind of cultural and structural split is exactly what legacy automakers need to survive. Rebuilding vehicle architecture without forty years of internal combustion compromises is a massive win.

Yet, stellar engineering solves only half the equation. The best vehicle platform in the world will fail if the showroom experience feels like an ambush.

The F-150 Lightning Ghost

Early adopters remember the launch of the F-150 Lightning vividly, and not for the right reasons.

Customers who placed genuine reservations and waited months for delivery arrived at dealerships only to discover staggering markups. Dealers tacked on $10,000, $20,000, and sometimes over $30,000 in arbitrary “market adjustments” on top of the sticker price.

Having lived through that exact frustration as a buyer, the feeling is unmistakable: it completely destroys brand loyalty.

When legacy dealerships price gouge the very enthusiasts championing a brand’s future, they hand those customers directly to direct-to-consumer competitors like Tesla and Rivian. At those brands, the price shown on the configurator is the price paid at checkout. No negotiations, no backroom sales manager approval, and no surprise twenty-thousand-dollar markup.

If Ford allows their upcoming vehicle releases to turn into another speculative markup playground for dealers, buyers will simply walk away.

Tech Innovations vs. Surveillance Creep

Alongside retail friction, vehicle software direction needs scrutiny.

Modern drivers want intuitive interfaces, seamless phone integration, responsive battery preconditioning, and snappy OTA software updates.

What they do not want are controversial patent filings hinting at vehicles doubling as rolling surveillance hubs that track and report neighbor speed limits or serve in-car targeted ads. When an automaker files patents around invasive monitoring systems, it damages trust before a single wheel hits the asphalt. Innovation should empower the person behind the steering wheel, not monitor them.

What Ford Needs to Do Next

To ensure the new electric lineup delivers on its potential, Ford must protect the customer journey as fiercely as its engineering:

  1. Enforce Binding MSRP on Pre-Orders: Franchise laws make direct sales complicated, but Ford can attach strict allocation penalties to dealerships that mark up custom reservations. If a dealer gouges a reservation holder, they should forfeit future high-margin allocations.
  2. Guarantee Delivery-Day Pricing: A reservation deposit should function as a locked contract, not an invitation to renegotiate on the delivery lot.
  3. Double Down on Privacy-First Tech: Software development should focus on range efficiency, driving dynamics, and frictionless charging integration rather than monitoring systems that provoke customer backlash.

Ford has the scale, the manufacturing muscle, and the engineering talent to define the next chapter of American electric transit. But great cars do not matter if the buying process feels broken. If Ford wants drivers to stay for the long haul, they have to fix the showroom floor.
