In a city full of great food, I’m often asked for my “hidden gem.” I don’t point to a flashy new restaurant; I give them an intersection: E. Bears and N. 22nd.
That’s where you’ll find Taqueria La Mexicana, a no-frills food truck that is, in my opinion, one of the most authentic and reliable taco spots in all of Tampa.
This isn’t a place for bells and whistles. It’s a place you go for flavor. You’ll hear the buzz about their carne asada or the lengua and it’s all true. The portions are generous, the prices are right, and the food just never disappoints.
My personal go-to order is a custom one: I always get five tacos three de asada (steak) and two de pollo (chicken) supreme no onions . There’s a perfect simplicity to it: the meat is always perfectly seasoned, and it’s the ideal way to get the best of both.
Pro-Tip: Whatever you get, do not skip the hot sauce. It has the perfect kick.
And if I’m really hungry? I’ll add on a Torta de Bistec (steak sandwich). It’s massive, perfectly toasted, and just pure comfort.
It’s not fancy. It’s just real. And in a world of hype, it’s the kind of place that reminds me why I love this city.
